BIOGRAPHY

NGAIRE HALINA-PROTOPSALTIS
ARTIST - ILLUSTRATOR - GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Ngaire Halina, artists signature is "Ni Protopsaltis."
She was born in Alberta and raised in Coquitlam BC. She has completed 3 years in Fine Arts and Graphic Design at Kwantlen College, continuously taking courses related to graphics and illustration. After graduating, she pursued her design career, doing fine arts as a hobby.
Since 1986, she's been living in Athens, Greece. It is here that she taught art in an elementary school and pursued her Fine Arts. The majority of her work was in oils although she also did watercolour and pastels. Subject matter consisted of landscapes, wildlife and nudes. Living near the Mediterranean Sea led her to paint more seascapes and landscapes using oils.
Out of the many artists she has studied, one of her favourites is Robert Bateman. She believes that her design background and Robert Bateman's style of painting has influenced her own painting. When composing a painting she will look for a challenging subject. She will start with sketches and then go into photography for reference of detail. When doing oils, she starts with a two-inch paintbrush working very loosely. By the time she's completed her painting she'll be using a #0 to #1 paint brush. She loves using all materials but tends to lean towards oils. As they are slow drying, they give her the freedom to take her time blending and getting the detail that she desires. She has had two exhibitions in Athens, Greece. One at he New-Star Galleries in 1999 and the other in Soula's Gallery in 1998.
She returned to British Columbia in December 1999, this time with her husband and two beautiful daughters. Since returning, she currently teaches art at the Port Moody Art Centre. She has exhibited her watercolour and oil paintings at: The Blackberry Gallery, The Coquitlam public Library, The Langely Art Walk, Place des Arts
and at the Plaskett Gallery-Massey Theatre.
